MN Eye Consultants is currently hiring for a full-time Medical Biller at our Bloomington location. This position can be 100% remote or a hybrid position: work from home and in office.
SUMMARY
Performs various business office functions including but not limited to actively working Accounts Receivables, processing of insurance claims, electronic billing, posting of payments, timely account follow-up, collecting patient balances and setting up payment plans, answering patient questions on the phone along with end of day and month end balancing in accordance with business office policies and procedures to strengthen our Revenue Cycle.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Knowledge of the A/R process and works aging reports according to supervisor direction.
- Process and submit pending insurance claims in accordance with billing guidelines and department procedures including follow up.
- Troubleshoot claims and work with third party payers as well as patients to resolve the billing. This includes submitting corrected claims and creating appeal letters.
- Posting of remittances from third party payers along with patient payments.
- Collections of patient balances in accordance with collection procedures.
- Analyze reimbursement audits to ensure transaction processing accuracy.
- Provide customer service while addressing patient billing calls; resolves issues to meet patient needs or requirements in a timely and proactive manner.
- Ensure daily balancing of posted charges and transactions.
- Ability to navigate through and understand the Electronic Practice Management and Electronic Health Records (NextGen).
- Processing of correspondence and filing in a timely manner.
- Participate in regular team meetings; provide positive feedback and suggestions.
- Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Associate’s degree (AA) from two-year college or technical school preferred; and/or equivalent experience.

- Review clinical chart documentation to ensure the services coded by the physician team are properly documented, and coded.
- Assess operative notes for completeness and assign appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes to all outpatient surgical procedures.
- Capture timely and accurate charges, including but not limited to, electronic processing of clinical charges, updating encounter set up, modifiers, diagnosis codes, CPT order, and invoice supplies in accordance with billing and coding guidelines.
- Demonstrate knowledge and remain current with changes in coding and billing regulations, insurance specific policies, as well as company policy and procedures. Create and maintain a reference library of coding, data entry, and reimbursement policies/procedures.
- Conduct provider chart reviews per the company compliance policy. Specifically, this includes onboarding new physicians, annual chart reviews, and following up on areas of improvement.
- Implement and oversee coding and documentation training program for providers, clinical support, and revenue cycle teams.
- Communicate clearly and concisely with physicians, clinical support teams, revenue cycle team, and management regarding coding and documentation clarifications, policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Assist Revenue Cycle teams with coding related needs including managing unbilled reports for clinical and surgical services, supplying codes for accurate prior authorizations, reviewing coding related claim denials, and assisting the team in addressing patient coding related inquiries.
- Identify areas of opportunity for improved documentation in the clinic, or efficiency in daily work, and coordinate training with the Revenue Cycle Manager for purposes of team member professional development and revenue impacts.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Associate degree (AA) from two-year college or technical school preferred; and/or two to three years’ related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination.
- Minimum of 3 years medical billing and coding experience.
- Coding certification required.
- Previous Ophthalmology experience is a plus.
- Knowledge of medical and insurance terminology.
- Previous experience in working with Commercial, Medicare, Medicaid and managed care insurance plans and procedures preferred.
- Proficient with computers. Including experience in Microsoft applications – word, excel, outlook, and previous experience with electronic claim filing and practice management software programs.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Certified Procedural Coder, Ophthalmic Coding Specialist, Certified Coding Specialist, Registered Health Information Technician, or Registered Health Information Administrator required. Ongoing certification maintenance is required.

SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Revenue Cycle Director, the Billing Specialist, a key position in the Revenue Cycle, manages the claims process, including accurate and timely claim creation, follow-up and correspondence with providers, insurance inquiries/correspondence. The incumbent will assist in the clarification and development of process improvements and inquiries, assure payments related to patient services from all sources are reconciled timely in order to maximize revenues.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure that charges for services provided are accurately billed to the appropriate insurance companies via electronic and paper claim submissions
- Reviews accounts receivable to maximize collections including and resubmitting previously denied claims
- Receive, retrieve, sort and post incoming payments
- Manage status of accounts and balances and identifying inconsistencies
- Send reminders for payments and contact clients when assigned
- Identifies over payments and creates refund request
- Accurately reviews and resolves assigned claim and clearinghouse edits and payer rejections to minimize lag days
- Answer questions and handle complaints from patients regarding bills
- Adherence to laws and best practices in regards to dealing with customers and data
