The Medical Optometrist is responsible for diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of non-surgical eye conditions. This role focuses on medical eye care, including retinal diseases, inflammatory eye disorders, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma management, and ocular complications of systemic illness. The specialist works closely with multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive patient-centered care.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive eye exams to assess vision and ocular health.
- Diagnose and manage eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other ocular conditions.
- Prescribe medications, therapeutic treatments, and corrective lenses as needed.
- Collaborate with ophthalmologists and other healthcare providers for patient referrals and co-management.
- Educate patients on eye health, disease prevention, and treatment options.
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient records in compliance with healthcare regulations.
- Stay current with advancements in optometry and ocular disease management.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited institution.
- OD Residency or experienced PREFERRED
- Valid Minnesota Optometry license PREFERRED.
- Experience in medical optometry and ocular disease management preferred.
- Strong diagnostic and clinical skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties

Evaluate patients with acute and chronic ophthalmic conditions through detailed history and examination.

Diagnose and manage medical eye diseases such as:

Diabetic retinopathy

Macular degeneration

Uveitis and ocular inflammation

Glaucoma (medical management)

Ocular infections

Neuro-ophthalmic disorders

Interpret ophthalmic diagnostic tests including:

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA)

Visual field testing

Ultrasound imaging

Provide intravitreal injections and laser treatments where appropriate.

Monitor disease progression and adjust treatment plans accordingly.

Medical degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent)
