SUMMARY
The Clinic Lead performs a range of complex Lead duties in support of the Clinic Manager and to ensure excellent clinic flow and patient care. Serves as the primary point of contact when Clinic Manger is not present to provide support to Team Members, Patients and Providers. Helps and performs Technician and/or Scribe duties as needed in clinic.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Make introductions and establish rapport with patients. Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines.
- Test and Record Visual Acuity for patients of all levels of acuity, including preliterate, illiterate, non-verbal, and foreign language patients. Test Visual Acuity using Pinhole Occluder, Stereoacuity, Near Point Accommodation and Convergence, Distance and Near Acuity using optotype.
- Perform Visual Fields testing utilizing Amsler Grid, Confrontation Visual Fields, Automated Perimetry, and Goldmann Perimetry.
- Measure and Assess Pupils – RAPD.
- Measure and Record Intraocular Pressure using hand-held tonometer, applanation tonometer, and non-contact tonometer.
- Test and Record Ocular Motility for Versions and Ductions, Functions, Anomalies, Cover Tests, Stereoacuity, Nystagmus, and Worth 4 Dot.
- Perform automated and manual Keratometry.
- Neutralize spectacles using an automated and manual lensometer.
- Measure refractive errors with an automated refractor and utilize fogging, duochrome, and binocular balance refractive techniques. Perform and record retinoscopy. Determine near add for bifocals, trifocals, and multifocal lenses. Calculate and record spherical equivalence.
- Perform diagnostic/standardized A-Scans and B-Scans.
- Perform and Record glare testing (BAT), potential acuity meter (PAM), pachymetry, OCT glaucoma laser testing, color vision testing, tear testing - Schirmer, BUT, Rose Bengal, Maddox Rod measurements, corneal sensitivity testing, fusional amplitudes.
- Assist with PDT and Yag and Argon Laser Therapies, intraocular injections, and minor procedures. Perform sterilization and instrumentation preparation for procedures.
- Transpose cylinder readings, prescriptions, and vertex distances.
- Perform contact lens fitting for soft, toric, and bifocal lenses. Apply bandage lens.
- Perform corneal topography imaging and HRT/OCT scanning laser tests for glaucoma and retina. Perform fluorescein angiography.
- Perform and record slit lamp/anterior segment, fundus and external photography.
- Refill medications.
- Perform scribe duties as needed.
- This is an in-office position, remote work is not available.
- Other duties as assigned.
Lead Responsibilities
- Support and assist the Clinic Manager in special projects, as assigned.
- Act as role model, demonstrate leadership abilities, and maintain direct supervision of patient care administered by team members.
- Reports directly to the Clinic Manager, identifying concerns and needs regarding team members.
- Demonstrates professionalism and leadership as evidenced by excellence in patient care; strongly supports and adheres to administrative policy; effectively communicates at inter and intra-departmental levels; uses effective leadership within the assigned team that he/she directly monitors and a high level of participation with peers and area manager, and physician support.
- Monitor and direct all aspects of patient care administered by team members as outlined in their respective job descriptions.
- Manage and/or arrange physician clinic and appointment schedules, avoiding conflicts and notifying all appropriate persons and departments of changes as necessary.
- Assist supervisor in scheduling of team members for routine clinic services as well as requested time off and adjustments for unexpected absences.
- Assist supervisor in Performance Reviews/ Evaluations of assigned team members, providing objective facts and data as required.
- Triage patients and patient calls for assigned physician and assists the assigned triage nurse with issues that are specific to designated physician.
- Review and assess all paperwork and/or charting to assure completion and accuracy, to include that which is initiated by self, team members and physicians.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of an accredited Ophthalmic Technician program or a Bachelor of Science degree strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Ophthalmic technician or assistant.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification through JCAHPO required.
- Current Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification through JCAHPO strongly preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position has no direct reports or supervisory responsibilities.
