- Open exam rooms at the beginning of the shift, ensure all equipment is clean and ready for the doctor
- Obtain complete patient histories including chief complaint, past ocular/medical history, family medical/ocular history and history of allergies and medications.
- Perform and document subjective and objective ophthalmic testing efficiently to provide basic and extensive information necessary for ophthalmic examinations. This includes but is not limited to: history, visual acuities, lensometry (manual and auto), keratometry (manual and automated) visual fields, tonometry, A-scan, B-scan, fundus photography, perform refractive surgery workup’s, assist with basic and complex clinical procedures
- Acquaint all patients with the office procedures to which they will be exposed. Inform patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests.
- Assist in the maintenance and calibration of equipment
- Assist with ongoing education and mentoring of staff
- Stock all necessary supplies; clean all equipment and close down exam rooms at the end of the day
- Regularly communicate and interact with Clinic Manager, MD’s, OD’s, and other members of the clinical team

SUMMARY
The Triage Technician is a dual clinical role with primary functions split between handling patient phone calls and triaging ocular concerns to determine the urgency of clinic visits, and performing measurements and tests as part of the patient work up necessary for the provider to determine a diagnosis and provide treatment. Starting pay is $20.00-24.00/hour.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Phone Triage-Specific
- Triage patient phone calls, answer questions and resolve concerns as directed by the provider to achieve patient satisfaction.
- Determine the urgency for a clinic visit, if at all, and schedule patients accordingly.
- Properly document all calls using the Patient Communication log in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

Position Summary
This position is responsible for performing measurements and tests that provide the physician with the information needed to arrive at a diagnosis and to prescribe treatment. This position primarily works with Doctors of Optometry but may see patients for any MEC provider within their skill-set. Starting pay is $20.00-23.00/hour.
This position will work Monday-Friday, between 7:30am-5:00pm. May require an occasional 1/2 day on Saturday (1-2 times per year). The home base of this position is the Minnetonka clinic, but may be scheduled to work shifts at the other MEC locations as needed (Blaine, Bloomington and Woodbury).

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Evaluation of self-practice in context with professional practice standards and relevant statutes and regulations.
- Acquires and maintains current knowledge in nursing practice.
- Obtains patients’ medical history and performs physical assessment for assigned patients.
- Presents the historical and physical data to the physician to aid in determining the diagnostic and therapeutic measures necessary to correct the patient’s problem.
- Initiates a patient education plan according to the individualized needs of the patient, as prescribed by Physician and/or practice policy including patient and family instruction; explains procedures and treatments to patient to gain cooperation, understanding and allay apprehension.
- Prepares equipment and aids Physician during treatment and examination of patient; administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing techniques; prepares rooms, sterile instruments, equipment and supplies for surgery.
- Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions and notifies Physician of patient’s condition and reaction to drugs, treatments and significant incidents; takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assess condition of patient.
- Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient; responds to emergency situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures and protocol.
- Participates in training of personnel.
- Responsible for preparing the patient for the anticipated surgical procedure, including obtaining an informed consent, completing a pre-operative patient assessment and performing any procedure or administering medications required to prepare the patient for surgery.
- Communicates with the circulating nurse, the recovery room nurse, the anesthesia care provider and the surgeon to coordinate a safe and comfortable surgical experience.
