SUMMARY
The Patient Counselor is responsible for the scheduling of all surgical appointments, providing a positive first impression of PEI and being knowledgeable in complex scheduling scenarios and insurance plans. This includes meeting with patients, answering calls, entering demographic information, scheduling appointments, and providing appointment instructions to patients. The Patient Counselor is also responsible for patient education for recommended upgrades by the surgeon.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Schedule surgical patients as assigned by management in a clinic setting.
- Create consistency in the patient experience through.
- Conduct patient consultations for products and services recommended by the surgeon.
- Maintain strong knowledge on current services and products available for patients.
- Obtain and enter accurate patient demographics, including insurance information.
- Complete patient registration at the time of scheduling and give tentative surgical date.
- Coordinate patient care, ensuring accuracy of referrals for surgery by obtaining approval from providers and scheduling surgery and all post-operative appointments.
- Request medical clearances as required for patient
- Schedule and coordinate post-op visits, A-scans, IOL measurements and Pentacams.
- Request Cornea tissue from the eye bank and verify delivery time to coordinate with surgery. Follow up with Tissue Bank to confirm delivery.
- Inform Surgery Center of any upgraded/premium services being added.
- Complete and fax medical clearance requests to PCPs when indicated.
- Maintain patient portal questions regarding scheduling and registration and contact patients back to schedule their requested appointments.
- Receive and complete all tasks sent through the Electronic Health Records.
- Prepare surgical charts and surgical paperwork.
- Coordinate co-management services.
- Facilitate strong communication with the surgery team and ASC Surgical Coordinators. Partner with ASC Coordinators to track and reschedule all cancellations and no shows.
- Schedule and reschedule surgical patients as needed for your designated clinic for all Physicians.
- Manage assigned surgeon’s ASC schedule and preferences to maximize block time at the ASCs ASC. Keep close communication with surgeons regarding their schedules.
- Arrange co-surgeries and complex surgeries and procedures with external medical facilities.
- Maintain surgery cancellation list and follow up with patients that need to be rescheduled.
- Monitor voicemail on a regular basis to ensure patient’s needs are met in a timely manner.
- This is an in-office position, remote work is not available.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school education with one-two years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience with a high focus on customer service, insurance plans, and medical background. Ophthalmology experience a plus.

SUMMARY
The Temp Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for attending to patients in a timely and professional manner while providing a first-class customer service experience with all patients. The Ophthalmic Technician performs measurements and tests that provide the physician with the information needed to arrive at a diagnosis and to prescribe treatment. This position may see patients for our provider within their skill set.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Greet all patients and guests with highest level of customer service and care and in accordance with company standards. Anticipate and address service needs, assist individuals with disabilities, and thank others with genuine appreciation. Treat each patient with respect by greeting them by name, introducing yourself, and ensuring that the patient understands tests, procedures, and the process during the exam.
- Obtain complete patient histories including chief complaint, past ocular/medical history, family medical/ocular history and history of allergies and medications.
- Perform ophthalmologic tests including visual acuity, applanation tonometry, pachymetry, visual fields, corneal topography, OCTs, lensometry, and other tests as directed within the prescribed timeline.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Knowledge of ophthalmology terms, conditions and clinical flow preferred.
- Professional verbal communication skills, demonstrating ability to educate patients in a friendly and positive manner.
- Ability to clearly document activities in Electronical Medical Records system preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to move between and progress tasks forward.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
- Typing, Computer and Data entry
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum one year of experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry setting.
